Enjoying a Well-Planned Home Office
As an Arizona custom home builder, there are very few homes constructed today that don’t include some type of office space. If the home doesn’t include a den, an additional bedroom could be converted into a home office. Today, the needs for an office vary from those who simply want an area for paying bills or making grocery lists to complete home-based businesses. In today’s economy some people are trading in the overhead and expenses of renting outside office space and working from home at far less expense. Obviously, people have different office needs. To many people, a home office is defined as an area used for working at a desk while others may define it as a retreat to quietly get something done away from the family, or just a quiet place for reading a book.
As an Arizona custom home builder, we often assist our custom homebuyers with planning and designing home office space. There are many questions we will assist our custom homebuyer answer, including:
- How will the office be used? How the office will be used is critical for the design of the space, for example, if the office will hold one or possibly two desks will determine it’s size and shape.
- Will you host outside visitors? If the home office will be used to host meetings or have visitors from outside the home, might determine if the home office should have a separate entrance so the visitors will not traipse through more private areas of the home.
- Where will the desk be located in the office, next to a wall, or freestanding? If the desk is freestanding, you might want to include a floor based outlet and CATV outlet at the floor near the desk’s planned location.
- Will you need a location for storing files?
- Will you include the installation of custom cabinets or bookcases that can highlight book collections, yet hide office files in a built-in custom cabinet?
- Will a television be located in the home office, if so, where would you like it located in relation to the desk so that CATV outlets can be located exactly where you plan to put your television?
“Those who fail to plan, plan to fail” is an old adage that carries a great deal of weight in when planning and designing a custom home, including with home offices.
