5 Easy Steps to Transforming a Spare Bedroom into A Guest Room Retreat!

Continuing in our series of bedroom makeovers – transitioning a spare bedroom to a guest room retreat takes us to step four, accessorizing a guest room. Once the beds are selected, the colors for the room chosen, and the fabrics selected, it is time for step four, selecting accessories.  When working on a bedroom makeover, it may be a bit easier if using a 5-step strategy.  The five steps include:

  1.  Bed selection
  2. Color selections
  3. Fabric selections
  4. Guest room accessories
  5. Making your guests feel welcome

Accessories in a guest room can be anything you want, it can be pictures and lamps you know longer want in a more public room of the house.  If you have a couple of small tables, end tables, nightstands, or round tables, you can mix different tables to use as night stands.  Lamps on either side of the bed don’t necessarily have to match either, try to make sure they are the same height, if one is shorter than another, place the shorter one on a stack of large display books.

If there is room for a small a chair, you can create a small sitting area, as long as the color is consistent.  A bright green recliner no longer used in a living area may spoil your neutral colored calm and quiet retreat, unless that is the bold color you want your guest’s to see when entering the room.  Remember your eyes follow color and a big bold bright green recliner will draw all of your visitor’s attention right to that bright color.

For bedroom makeovers you can set a theme in this room unique to the rest of the house, you can show off your very special collection of glass elephants, you can fill a small bookshelf with books by your favorite author, or you can highlight an entire wall with your kids’ artwork as a special display.

Sometimes, it’s fun to go shopping for a few accessories, but it isn’t always necessary.  Walking around your house and scouring accessories already in your home works well too.  Sometimes we keep accessories, or knick-knacks in one place so long, they are not even noticed anymore.  Try moving things around.  Take your old ‘home magazines’ and put them in a basket for your guests to peruse if they quiet down time in their room.   Just because you’ve read that Phoenix Home and Garden three times doesn’t mean you must throw it out.  Your house guests from the Midwest may appreciate the Arizona home themed magazine.

Bedroom makeovers can be fun, if we don’t let the process intimidate us, taking the process in steps or phases can make it easier.  Once the bed or bed are selected for the guest room, colors selected, fabrics and bedding selected, and the room accessorized, then it is time to welcome the guests into the room in step five.

5.  Make your guests feel welcome.  Once the room is set up and decorated the way you like it, you’ll want to make your guests feel welcome.  A few days before your guests arrive place a diffuser in the room.  The day your guests arrive, place a fresh bouquet of flowers in their room, with a box of chocolates, and a bowl of fruit.  In the guest bathroom, fill a bowl or basket with travel size packages of toothpaste, disposable razor, deodorant, shampoo, lotion, and soap just in case they need them.  In the evening before bed, place a tray with a pitcher of ice-cold water and glasses, or cold bottled water in their room for any nighttime thirst.  Each of these is a small task, yet will allow your guests to feel as though they are truly welcome and staying in one of the best resorts in town.

These techniques include bed selection, eye pleasing colors, bedding fabrics, room accessories, and details specifically for your guests upon their arrival.
