5 Easy Steps to Transform a Spare Bedroom into a Guest Room Retreat!

Bedroom makeovers are needed every once in a while to freshen up a room as well as our own senses.  Transforming a spare room into a guest bedroom is a pure luxury.  A guest retreat can be shaped by your own interests and taste, some see a savvy mix of fabrics with muted colors as the ultimate in luxury and comfort, offering guests a calm but opulent retreat.  Others might use it as way to highlight a personal collection, or focusing on distinctive details that truly flatter a room.  There are many techniques that can effectively transform a spare bedroom it into an opulent guest retreat.  If breaking down the techniques into five steps, bedroom makeovers become more manageable.  The five steps include:

  1. Bed selection
  2. Color selections
  3. Fabric selection
  4. Guest room accessories
  5. Making your guests feel welcome

Step one, bed selection. The bed or beds selected for a guest retreat can immediately set the tone for the room.  Most of us put any old extra bed into a guest room, as spare bedrooms often get filled with leftover pieces of furniture and accessories.  As an alternative to a single bed strategy, consider two beds, perhaps two twin-size beds.  There aren’t any rules that say the beds even have to have the same headboard, using the same bed coverings on each bed will pull the room together.  Unless all of your house guests are couples, a set of twin beds offers more flexibility than one larger bed.  If your mother and sister want to visit together, perfect, there are two beds, if your sister and niece want to visit, equally as perfect.

Beginning with step one, bed selection usually determines how the room will be arranged.  Many times the bed or beds are the largest pieces of furniture in a bedroom and are placed along the largest wall, allowing room for a nightstand or table between the beds.  The beds can be located very close together if space is at a premium, allowing for small nightstands on each side of the bed as shown below.  Bedroom makeovers performed in phases or stages make the feat much more manageable.  Once you have determined the bed or beds for the room move on to step two, color selection.
