5 Easy Steps for Transforming a Spare Bedroom into A Guest Room Retreat

Bedroom makeovers can be challenging especially when taking a stark empty room and transitioning it to a luxurious or opulent retreat for house guests.  Most of us want house guests to feel welcome and relaxed in a warm and comfortable space while staying in our home. When transforming a spare bedroom into a comfortable guest retreat, it may be a bit easier if using a 5-step strategy.  The five steps include:

  1. Bed selection
  2. Color selections
  3. Fabric selection
  4. Guest room accessories
  5. Making your guests feel welcome

Once the beds have been selected for the room and the wall placement decided, it’s time to move on to step two, color selections.  This includes color selections for the walls, fabrics, and possibly flooring.

Choose colors pleasing to the eye.  The colors selected for bedroom makeovers set the tone for the room, many times, as AZ custom home builders; we paint most rooms of a home the same color, a neutral beige or white.  Many times the homeowners will paint rooms later in unique faux finishes or for special design considerations such as bedroom makeovers.  Why not try an accent color for your guest room?  Perhaps one wall, the window wall could be painted two or three shades darker than the other walls, and place rich full draperies of the same darker color on that wall. By using draperies of the same darker shade, you have added color AND texture to this wall.  Draperies of the same darker color as on the wall allow your eyes to slowly transition around the room rather than bounce from light color to dark color to light color.

Rather than use the same neutral color throughout, select an accent color, perhaps a bold, but eye pleasing color that fits with the architectural style of the home and the home’s decor.  Outlined in the photo below is a beautiful terra-cotta color used on the wall in this bedroom.  In Arizona custom homes, terra-cotta is a popular color as it is one of the natural colors of the Arizona terrain.  The Red Mountains northeast of Phoenix or the beautiful Red Rocks of Sedona offer the natural and beautiful ranges of yellows, oranges and reds of our natural Arizona environment.

Keep in mind your eyes follow color, so too much of a good thing can be very distracting, that’s why a little bit of animal print goes a long way.  Imagine entering a light colored room OVERLY accented in red.  A red pillow here, a red picture there, a red vase here, a tiny red picture way up there, a red lamp there, your eyes will jump from one bright red accessory to another and to most people this is not pleasing to the eye.  If you want the room to be appealing and pleasing to the eye, keep colors consistent in hue and tone and throw in one or two LARGE colored accent items.  If changing the flooring, consider a neutral color that matches the walls, again allowing a smooth transition as your eyes follow the details of the room.

When you have selected and added the colors to the room, or at least one accent paint color, you will be ready for step three, fabric selections.  Bedroom makeovers be less intimidating if taken one step at a time.
