KITCHEN CABINETS DESIGN… BEYOND THE KITCHEN AND BATH!

by Arizona Custom Home Builder on October 15, 2009

Whether in the laundry room, living room, hobby room, or close to the kitchen, planning kitchen cabinets design in other-rooms offers a variety of options that regular furniture fails to provide.  Roll-out shelves, drawers, tip-out shelves, and other unique functional storage areas can be created with a bit of imagination for almost any room.

The Flexibility of Built-In Cabinetry

As AZ custom home builders, we have often constructed homes incorporating home offices, laundry rooms, and butler pantries with custom kitchen cabinetry; more recently we have created mudrooms, and hobby rooms. When planning kitchen cabinets design for other-rooms, using the principles for functional, practical and useful storage clearly demonstrates how custom kitchen cabinetry can be used so well in these other-rooms.  As opposed to a standard piece of furniture, every corner of a room can be used; built-in cabinetry can be constructed from ceiling to floor, adding even more useful space.

Custom kitchen cabinetry can be installed in almost any room.  An ordinary room can be transformed into a:

  1. Hobby room for sewing, quilting, crafting, or gift wrapping.  A sitting area can be created for the sewing machine; a large counter height island or table can be installed for cutting fabrics, or standing work.  A gift-wrapping station can be created with easily accessible storage of ribbons and wraps.
  2. Home study area for the kids.  Multiple homework stations, including a desk area for a computer, desk like storage and book shelves for text books can be terrific and functional areas for children.
  3. Additional serving area. Often custom kitchen cabinetry is located near a kitchen as in a butler pantry, but can be installed in breakfast nook areas and create extra counter space for big parties or family reunions. A counter surface in this area is great as a self-serving area for drinks, or part of a buffet line.
  4. Built-in entertainment centers.  As opposed to a stand-alone piece of furniture or built-in drywall areas, built-in cabinetry can be designed to contain a TV, speakers and components matching and coordinating with the cabinets of the kitchen.

Imagination may be the only limitation when it comes to planning kitchen cabinets design  for other-rooms.  In addition to the increased functional and useful storage space created, it may create that calm feeling that goes with knowing ‘there is a place for everything and everything is in its place’.
