KITCHEN DESIGN IDEAS FOR COUNTER TOP EDGES

When Selecting New Counter Tops, There is Usually an Edge Choice As Well

There are endless kitchen design ideas when selecting counter top materials during new home construction or kitchen makeovers, including Formica, ceramic or stone tile, granite, recycled glass, glass, and concrete, among still others.  If installing new counter surfaces when remodeling bathrooms or for most kitchen makeovers, you’ll need to make a selection for the type of counter top material that you want, as well as the finished edge that you’ll like to see in that material.

When coordinating kitchen design ideas with the kitchen cabinet style, cabinet wood, stain color, glaze, appliances and home’s style it has to all come together for those great ideas to become reality.  As AZ custom home builders, most of our customers choose granite for their counter top surfaces. When selecting granite, it is also necessary to select the finished edge you would like.  There are a vast number of choices when making edge selections. There are square edges, radius finished edges, full bull nose edges, half bull nose edges, and a variety of ogee edges.  Many counter top fabricators and installers have their own names for these edges.

Some granite materials and colors have a more contemporary look and feel, such as black galaxy, popular for a contemporary or modern kitchen.  Just as the material itself can have a contemporary look and feel, so can the edge selected.   Some edges have a more contemporary look and feel while others have a more traditional feel. Some edges have a simple smooth profile, while others appear as more complex.  The simplest profile may work well with a contemporary kitchen, but as with so many other kitchen design ideas, there is absolutely no right or wrong decision when selecting counter top edges.  A simple profile may work as well in an Old World kitchen as a modern kitchen.  Photos below highlight radius edges, a smooth edge where the sharp corners have been removed, and an ogee edge with a more elaborate and complicated cut and finish.

My kitchen is red very red I’m lost on the living room color. Sence these rooms run together I’m thinking of something in the orange hue not bright but muted color. I just don’t know if this is to much? also from my kit/livi you can see the bath that I painted purple. I love this color and need this all pulled together. With the living room color any ideas.

thanks.

Your colors sound great. The muted orange I imagine might be in the terra-cotta family as opposed to a peachy or pumpkin color. In Arizona, the reds and oranges work well together as they are often found in nature here like the red rocks of Sedona. There is a photo on our website of a kitchen hood that has been faux finished with a red/purple faux treatment. A faux finish like that on an architectural element in your home could pull together the purple from the adjacent room.
