Home Decor Design… Mixing Styles, Wood Pieces with Painted Pieces, Old with New, or Whatever You Like!

Styles come and go, remember black lacquer!  Thankfully, that went!  In today’s home trends there seems to be more and more acceptability for mixing styles.  Gone are the days when the bedroom pieces had to match or be purchased in a suite.  The mixy-matchy look in decorating design has long departed our homes.

An antique along side of a contemporary piece doesn’t sound like a fit, but in many cases, it works.  As AZ custom home builders, we have built very traditional style homes to very contemporary ones.  It is always a matter of customer preference.  It has been amazing for us to see how our customers mix and match styles. Painted wood pieces are mixed with traditional wood furniture pieces, a contemporary sofa flanked by antique side chairs, indoor tables taken outdoors as large dining tables, or a rustic wood table surrounded by sleek contemporary chairs.

For some of us, we grew up with Early American.  The maple end tables matched the maple coffee table.  The matching lamps flanking the sofa were placed on the matching maple end tables.  The sofa had a matching love seat, and if it had wooden arms, they were likely maple.  The maple dining room table and chairs matched the wood and style of the living room.  The thinking was, if furniture didn’t match, it just didn’t work.  So much has changed in decorating design for today’s homes.

So what’s right and what’s wrong?  Is there really a right and wrong?  It’s been said that many English interior designers love to decorate in America, because we have so few rules.  Hear!  Hear!  It’s also been said, that decorating design should be done with all of the things we like.  A home should be a place to feel safe, to enjoy and to love being in.  If it means you have a recliner as beat up as Frasier’s dad mixed with new and contemporary pieces, enjoy it!
