Three Factors to Consider When Selecting Light Fixtures for Your Custom Home

As an Arizona custom home builder of luxury custom homes we ask our customers to visit various lighting showrooms to select the lighting fixtures for the interior and exterior areas of their new home.  Whether the home is to be built in a high-end neighborhood of Scottsdale, or a ranch in Rio Verde, it makes sense to remain practical when selecting light fixtures.

We ask our customers to visit a large showroom to make their electrical fixture selections, in our experience as an Arizona custom home builder, a large showroom has a wide variety of lamps and fixtures for indoors and out.  Large showrooms carry many styles from contemporary low-voltage pendant lighting to oversized alabaster chandeliers, and carry every price range.  When building a custom home, it is important to remember three factors when selecting light fixtures and why it is important to make economical selections.

  1. When making selections, you are making selections for an entire home, this includes all functional lighting fixtures for closets, the laundry room, and garage, decorative lighting fixtures such as those above a kitchen table, bathroom vanity lighting, hallway accent lights, formal chandeliers, and exterior lighting.  We try to send our customers to the showroom with some kind of a budget that’s in line with the estimated cost of the home.  Getting carried away with expensive lighting fixtures may take you over-budget very quickly.
  2. Unlike furnishings, lighting fixtures stay with the house when the home is sold.  You may fall in love with a specific chandelier but keep in mind, the chandelier will stay in the home when the home is sold and a $5,000 chandelier does not add $5,000 to the value of the home when you sell it.  Like a pool, it adds value to a home, but  NOT usually the full cost of pool installation.
  3. Lighting fixtures often become outdated as quickly as 5 to 10 years after a home is constructed. If you stay in a home for 7 years, by the time you sell it, the fixtures may be outdated, and potential buyers may see this as a negative toward the home, because they may consider the cost of replacement.

As an Arizona custom home builder, helping our custom homebuyers get exactly what they want in their custom home is our goal.  We will assist our customers make to lighting selections that match the architectural style of the home, are lamp styles they adore, yet are reasonably priced.
