Outdoor Water Fountains… Peace and Tranquility in Your Own Outdoor Living Areas
In Arizona there is little more soothing than the sound of running water from an outdoor water fountain, especially in our hot, desert climate. There is something special about an outdoor living design that includes a water fountain. As in many outdoor living spaces, there seem to be ever-increasing types, sizes, and styles of outdoor water fountains. These can range from a traditional multi-tiered stand-alone fountains, wall-based fountains, trough fountains, to waterfall quoi ponds, each with its own style and unique way to accent a home’s outdoor living spaces.

If considering the installation of a water fountain in your yard, it’s important to locate the fountain properly. Nearly every fountain will splash, sometimes over the edges of the fountain. For this reason, it should be placed where any splashes will not damage a home’s exterior or any electrical outlets. Precast concrete fountains, despite their weight are not cemented together and should be placed on a level, compact surface for best performance. A fountain must be placed near an electrical outlet and water supply. Fountains placed around plants may collect debris.
Outdoor water fountains, as beautiful as they are, do require maintenance. The unit cannot run dry; otherwise the pump will burn out. It’s recommended to use distilled or RO water (reverse-osmosis) to protect the fountain’s surface. The water must be replaced as it evaporates if it doesn’t have automatic fill equipment. Loose debris such as twigs and leaves should be removed to prevent clogging the screen. Fountains must be cleaned periodically including maintenance to the pump. An algaecide should be used periodically to prevent algae growth.
Despite the maintenance required, an outdoor water fountain can enrich any outdoor living design with soothing water sounds, the feeling of peace and serenity, and an appreciation for the beauty of the fountain itself. Surrounded by a garden, flowering plants, and almost any outdoor living collection of furniture or dining table can create a fabulous focal point for any outdoor living design.
